MicroGrants are supported in the United States through Advocates. Spark Advocates work to raise awareness of our MicroGrants through hosting events, fundraising, and publicizing progress.
Salman Abdul Baset works as a researcher at IBM Watson Research Center. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Columbia University. He was selected as a Young Scholar in 2008 by Marconi Society. He helps run an online forum, STEP (Science, Technology, and Education in Pakistan -- http://www.nextstepforward.net).

Nate Barthel
Nate Barthel works as a technical consultant, working
with multiple organizations on projects focused on technology and development.
He has a professional background in systems engineering and project management.
Nate holds a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from Bucknell University and
a Master's in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. Currently he resides
with his wife in Baltimore, MD and is excited to be serving as an advocate for
the Electricity Project in Ruhango, Rwanda.
Christine Kelly
Christine recently graduated from the University of Vermont where she received a BS in Anthropology and Political Science. Through her involvement with STAND, a student led anti-genocide coalition, and working as a coordinator/advocate for refugees’ rights groups in Siracusa, Sicily, Christine has learned about the importance of challenging preexisting social injustices and promoting healthy community development. Christine is excited to team up with Spark as an advocate and is looking forward to her upcoming work with Spark in Rwanda.
Meghan Steinhaus
Meghan Steinhaus is a passionate advocate for issues of
social justice. Most recently, she has spent time focused on equity in higher
education and has co-taught a course that investigates how gender and race
affect leadership. Currently, Meghan is an instructor in the Mathematics
Department at the US Coast Guard Academy. She has been on active duty in
the Coast Guard since 2002, having spent 2 years serving onboard a Coast Guard
Cutter and 6 years working in various training positions. Meghan has a BS in
Operations Research from the Coast Guard Academy and an MS in Systems
Engineering from the University of Rhode Island.
Samantha is
currently a sophomore at Wheaton College with a major in English and a minor in
Development Studies. She is interested in the building and helping of
communities around the world. Samantha has worked with New York Cares and other
volunteer projects to help out her own community. She is excited to be an
advocate and get involved with helping the communities that Spark is affiliated
with this summer.
Annie is currently a senior at the University of Vermont with a double major in Community and International Development and Political Science. She is committed to seeking solutions to injustice in globalization and development, and is therefore very excited to advocate forSpark. Annie has interned with the International Forum on Globalization and currently volunteers with the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Center. She plans to travel to Rwanda in June to work with Spark.
