Get Involved

Volunteer as a Spark Advocate

MicroGrant Advocates work remotely to support a community-led development project. Advocating for one of Spark’s projects is a great way to get involved and to make a real contribution to a project’s success. You will gain hands on experience with community-led development, and help raise awareness of the grantees and their heroic work. Serving as a Spark Advocate is an excellent opportunity to learn first-hand about pressing issue for those living in extreme poverty, and get a ground-level view of how they can be addressed. No prior work experience is needed—only enthusiasm and compassion!

The role of Advocates

Spark Advocates play an important role in raising awareness and guaranteeing the success of Spark MicroGrant projects. Advocates are paired with the MicroGrant community of their choice and work remotely to support and promote their projects. Each Spark Advocate will choose a specific Spark MicroGrants project to support. The time commitment is approximately 2 hours per week for at least two months. Recommended activities include:

  • Interaction with grantees – get to know and learn how their project is progressing
  • Produce content for the Spark website, such as summaries of the issue, how the project is addressing

    the issue, and project updates

  • Provide feedback on proposals to help improve community projects
  • Host events to spread awareness about the project and raise funds
  • Help the grantees have their story heard by submitting articles to newspapers and blogs, calling in to

    radio shows, etc.

  • Be creative! Advocating for a Spark MicroGrants project can be a great basis for class projects,

    discussion groups, blogs, and more.
